It’s been over 3 years since back in the autumn of 2010 I started taking an iPad into Court – that was a first version iPad; whilst it has since been replaced, that first one still works, and is propped up in the kitchen used by the family. Perhaps because I’ve been using one from quite shortly after its first release some practitioners new to the tech, and some not so new, enquire which Apps I use and why. Since we started this Blog, at the end of each year, I have briefly reflected on the Apps I have found most useful. It is entirely subjective and others will have their own alternatives. My list is in fact shrinking, not because I’m using the iPad any less, if anything I’m using it even more. Rather I suspect that the advances made by App techies mean that instead of needing two Apps to do something, only one is needed; alternatively I’m just getting stuck in my ways.
So here goes, and as they say in no particular order.
Well one has to start with Pages and Numbers, though for some users the recent up-date is bugged with stability issues. It is true that it is somewhat disappointing that the App version lacks all the Fonts available in the Mac version; nevertheless for me, using a Mac, the ease of transfer, use and amendment of documents, outweighs other issues. This brings me to the transfer of documents – the Bar, indeed the Legal Profession as a whole, has to be very cautious about using Cloud storage, whether iCloud or Dropbox, for business documents (if you want an example that the ICO take the protection of data very seriously have a read). So I don’t use Cloud storage for any work documents (for another’s view do see ‘DropBox a Lawyer’s Perspective‘). However I like DropCopy as a method for easily transferring documents between computers and my iPad, and regularly use it.

On the subject of security, iPassword, is an App that allows the user to securely store access passwords, and user names for the various websites we all regularly use. One key website, Westlaw, has launched it’s own App (it’s currently a Beta version). I’ve been using this on both my iPad and Mac – it’s better on computer than on the iPad, but I know the App’s development team are keen to have feedback. If you want to have an App working how you want it to, do get involved; use it and provide your comments.
Free x air edit behringer for mac. I’ve recently discovered DropCopy, from 10base-t Interactive. This little utility’s 'window' is a small translucent dark spot, rather like a hole, that sits behind all other applications (and behind your desktop Finder icons).

Westlaw’s sister App ProView to my mind get’s better and better; I’ve had Archbold on my iPad from the very start, firstly as a PDF, and then from ProView’s first release (early posts from 2011 are in this Blog’s Archives); others might think differently; true it is that one colleague had such terrible trouble recently with ProView on his newly acquired Nexus 7, running Android KitKat, that he went out and bought an iPad, which is not great. Plus unless you read the ‘How To’ guide you’re not going to get the best out of it; however this is a user issue rather than to do with App. Once you get used to it, learn how to navigate and use the functions I find that the App is as quick if not quicker to use than the paper copy. As one gets older there is the added blessing that the size of the print can be changed too. So I’m not planning on returning to paper Legal Text books, and in particular Archbold.
I still use PDF Expert as my preferred PDF App for reading e-briefs (remember too to set up password protection); there is a new version of the App out though I have not up-graded yet. PDF Expert comes from Readdle; Readdle also created Scanner Pro an App I use when I’m faced by a paper document needing to be scanned and emailed as a PDF. I also continue to use GoodReader for other PDFs, and in particular for the ‘off-line version’ of Criminal Law Week (for how to do this see Saving Criminal Law Week to an iPad) – this is such a useful tool.
When it comes to case preparation iThoughtsHD is still the App of choice for me. It works well whether for planning a case, planning submissions or for preparing speeches. Simple to use which is the main thing.
Given this Post is being published on WordPress I suppose I should cover Social Media Apps. Of course Twitter has been immensely useful to the Criminal Bar to circulate ongoing complaints plus publicise the general uproar over the Governments ill-thought out plans for the future of publicly-funded criminal work (plus prison law, immigration, judicial review…). Though to be non-political for a moment putting aside Facebook, WordPress, Twitter, Flipboard etc the one App I have recently come too and enjoy using is Zite.

So that brings me to the end of my quick round-up; the iPad and these Apps have become invaluable tools over these past 3 years. Gone are the days of regularly having to lug around heavy bags of books and papers, which is such a blessing. Instead everything is now contained on one device – so you’d better set up Find my iPad.
